William Alfred

Born in New York City, 16 August 1922. Educated at Brooklyn College, B.A. 1948; Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, M.A. 1949, Ph.D. 1954. Served in the U.S. Army, 1943-46. Associate editor, American Poet, Brooklyn, 1942-44. Instructor, 1954-57, assistant professor, 1957-59, associate professor, 1959-63, and since 1963 professor of English, Harvard University. Recipient: Brooklyn College Literary Association award, 1953; Amy Lowell traveling poetry scholarship, 1956; Brandeis University Creative Arts award, 1960; American Academy grant, 1965. Died Cambridge 20 May, 1999
