Born in Rugby, Warwickshire, 30 July 1912. Educated at Downe House School; King's College, London, diploma in journalism 1932. Married Vivian Ridler in 1938; two sons and two daughters. Member of Editorial department, Faber and Faber publishers, London, 1935-40. Recipient: Oscar Blumenthal prize, 1954, and Union League Civic and Arts Foundation prize, 1955 (Poetry,Chicago)
