GLOBE CLASSICS

SHAKESPEARE'S GLOBE is proving to be one of the great success stories in the theatre world. As well as Shakespeare, its programme includes plays by many of his contemporaries. In fact, for every play by Shakespeare there are over ten surviving plays by other writers from the same era, most of which have lain neglected in libraries until now.

These plays are being rediscovered and revived with great success at Shakespeare's Globe both in full production and in staged readings. Globe Quartos put these plays back into print. These accessible editions are suitable for students, actors, general and specialist readers and reveal once again the theatrical artistry of Barnes, Beaumont, Dekker, Field, Fletcher, Haughton, Middleton, Wilkins and many others.

THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY
John Fletcher

Once famed for its obscenity, this vigorous and enjoyable play traces the fortunes of two brothers shipwrecked in a foreign land. By turns poignant and risqué, sentimental and satirical, its beautifully crafted plot embodies the collaborative art of its authors. It was given a staged reading in 1998 as part of Globe Education's on-going programme to record with professional casts all the non-Shakespearean plays of the English Renaissance.

THE DEVIL'S CHARTER
Barnabe Barnes

Our subject is of blood and tragedy, Murther, foul incest and hypocrisy'. In the sensational history of the Borgias, Barnabe Barnes found a theme tailor-made for the dark and lurid imaginings of the Jacobean stage. And then he spiced it up a little. This vigorous play was first performed by Shakespeare's company in 1607 and revived 390 years later in a semi-staged reading by Globe Education.
