Luciano has committed suicide in London because of his
love for Anna, his brother Paolo's wife. Luciano's papers
are given to Paolo, who does not burn them as advised but
reads them and then, his jealousy aroused, begins to seek
out his past. Disgusted with her husband's pettiness, Anna
decides that Luciano's death was pointless; she regrets her
unfulfilled love for the dead man and leaves her husband.
