Dave on the Beach

Dave au bord de mer

René Kalisky (1978).

Shaoul ben Qish, a real-estate speculator, and his family who reside in present-day Israel, welcome Dave ben Ishai, a poor Brooklyn Jew, into their midst. Ostensibly the American has come to entertain them by playing his 'cello. On another level, the Qish and Ishai have agreed to play out the Biblical encounter between Saul and David once again. Consequently ancient and contemporary Jewish history co-exist on the same stage, and the eternal conflicts of Jewish identity arise. In the end, as the Qish home is about to be overrun by foreign invaders — "Moabites, Canaanites, Palestinians, … — the American escapes.
