Pots of Money

(La cagnotte)

Eugène Labiche - 1864

Farce

about the adventures of a group of solid citizens from the provinces on a day's excursion to Paris, where they plan to spend their club's cagnotte, or kitty. Among them are Boursey, a respectable, unimaginative man of independent means; Leonida, his plump, unattractive sister; Blanche, his pretty daughter; Félix, a young lawyer eager to marry Blanche; and Corden, a phlegmatic pharmacist.

In pursuing their simple amusements in the city, the innocents are cheated by a restaurant owner, arrested for theft, and chased by the police through the streets. A sub-plot involves the complications resulting from the middle-aged Leonida's attempts to gain a husband through the machinations of Poche, a professional marriage broker. Finally, all difficulties are satisfactorily resolved, and the group gratefully returns home.
