Der Freigeist

The Freethinker

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing

Comedy (wr. 1748, prod. 1767).

The play depicts the transformation of Adrast, a morose and unpleasant skeptic and atheist. Adrast and Theophan, a gentle young minister, are suitors for the hands of two sisters. Each falls in love, however, with the other's intended, and in the ensuing difficulties Adrast strains even Theophan's patience. In the end goodness, gentle persuasion, and noble intentions win the day, the lovers are paired to their mutual satisfaction, and Adrast begins to model himself on the virtuous Theophan.
