After ten years' absence in the Algerian wars, a marquis, returning to France in disguise, finds that his wife is about to remarry. Having tested her love for the fidelity to the memory of her husband, who she believes to be dead, the Marquis reveals his identity, thus providing a happy ending to his "widow's" years of sorrow.
