La seconde surprise de l'amour

(The Second Surprise of Love )

(1727) Pierre Carlet de Marivaux

Comedy

Two young friends, the Marquise and the Chevalier, have each lost a loved one and are disconsolate. Though secretly in love with one another, they exchange mutual vows to remain impervious to love forevermore. The Marquise is therefore irritated when the Chevalier urges the suit of a count who is courting her, while the Chevalier becomes jealous when she seems delighted to accept the match. The Chevalier consequently decides to marry the Count's sister, but when the Marquise learns that her secret love for Chevalier is returned, she dismisses the Count. The two "disconsolate" lovers abandon their pledge against love and make plans to wed.
