Apollo laughs upon learning that Plutus intends to appropriate his mortal mistress. The ugly god, however, disguised as a financier, easily wins the girl and her guardian through his presents of money and jewels, which they prefer to Apollo's gifts of charm, music, and dance. Apollo philosophises that his loss is no disgrace, since it simply demonstrates that greed and vice rule the human heart.
