Die Matrosen von Cattaro

The Sailors of Cattaro

Friedrich Wolf (1930)

Revolutionary play based on the mutiny that took place in the Austro-Hungarian Navy shortly before the end of World War I.

The four main characters, Rasch, Graber, Sisgoric, and Bernicevic, symbolise the eternal struggle for justice and humanity. They succeed in inciting the sailors on the "St. Georg," who have long endured maltreatment and malnutrition, to rebellion. But the insurrection is suppressed by units loyal to the Crown. The movement collapses, and its leaders are executed. As one of them is led to his death, he prophesies the coming of a new day, the dawn of the revolution: "This is only the beginning!"
