King Pedro el Cruel of Castile and León, is a frequent visitor at the house of the shoemaker Diego Perez. When Diego's foster brother Don Juan, who is the instigator of a conspiracy against the King, asks him to join the plot, Diego refuses and Juan kills him.

Disguised as a soothsayer, the King learns of the deed and Juan's conspiratorial plans. Then Blas, son of Diego, asks the soothsayer to name his father's murderer; he is told to be at the palace the following day. There, just as the conspirators are ready to strike, the King points out Juan as Diego's killer, and Blas kills him.
